Ghostbusters fan Dylan Papp is looking to change that, revealing an updated look at his fan-made The Real Ghostbusters video game, that despite still appearing to be in early development, is pretty impressive!

On the topic of Ghostbusters video games, the franchise is seeing a bit of a resurgence within the gaming space, as not only are fans enjoying the recently released Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, but last week, it was announced that Ghostbusters: Rise Of The Ghost Lord will come to Quest 2 and PSVR 2 next year.

A gamerip is a collection of music that has been extracted directly from the game, and sometimes it has been tagged with correct song names and numbers, and the songs have been looped for a better listening experience. Some gamerips are so good, they function as soundtracks.

An original soundtrack or OST is an album that has been either physically or digitally released by the game's developers. These albums have correct track lengths, loops, track names and numbers, but often are incomplete, as representing every sound in a game can be cumbersome.

Some enjoy a game's music so much, that they want to create their own take on it. These are uploaded as either arrangements, remixes or unofficial soundtracks. Some arrangements are official, as they are done by the game's creators.

The Switch Online service provides players with access to an instant library of NES and SNES games, but many still argue that they would rather have a larger library of classic games that they can buy individually, as with the Virtual Console service on the Wii, Wii U and 3DS.

What some may not realise is that the Switch actually has over 1,300 retro games in its library already, meaning players with a soft spot for the good old days already have healthy access to a host of titles.

Meanwhile, the likes of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid and the Donkey Kong Country trilogy are similarly fantastic, as are Star Fox, Kirby Super Star, Stunt Race FX and Pilotwings. You even get Star Fox 2, the unreleased SNES game that was previously only available in the SNES Mini.

While the N64 emulation on the Switch got off to a pretty rocky start, the N64 app has received a number of updates since it launched in October 2021 and now it does a pretty good job of presenting these classic early polygonal games in high definition.

The company specialises in releasing individual arcade titles at an affordable price (usually $7.99 / 6.29 each). While the sheer number of games released to date means it would cost a small fortune to buy them all, the idea here is similar to the Virtual Console where players can choose which specific games they want to own.

The catalogue covers retro releases from the likes of Konami (Frogger, Track & Field, Sunset Riders), Taito (Bubble Bobble, Elevator Action, Darius), Technos (Double Dragon, Renegade, Super Dodge Ball) and Namco (Pac-Man, Rolling Thunder, Mappy, Dig Dug).

By far the most interesting thing about Arcade Archives on the Switch is that Hamster was given permission to release a number of Nintendo arcade games. There are 20 Nintendo arcade games on here, none of which were ever made available to buy in the past.

These include the arcade versions of the Donkey Kong games, the twin-screened Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out!! and the extra difficult VS Super Mario Bros.

The Neo Geo hardware came in two forms, the MVS and the AES. The MVS was an arcade board that supported special cartridges, meaning arcade owners could swap in and out games without having to buy new cabinets or expensive upgrade kits.

The Switch series, though, is arguably the best of the bunch. Developed by retro experts M2, each Sega Ages game provides a perfect recreation of the original game as well as extra features to make them the definitive versions.

If you only get one game in the series, get Virtua Racing, which has been entirely remastered in 1080p and 60fps and looks incredible, its basic polygonal graphics giving it a beautifully clean minimalist look these days.

There have been more than 30 of these released for the system to date, each containing a ready-made batch of games, sometimes with extra features like behind-the-scenes galleries or remastered versions.

Retroplayer (which is included with Kodi) will help you select and install the appropriate emulator from the official Kodi repository. In fact, if you already own ROMs of your favorite games, you can run them on Kodi without the need for external add-ons.

On Windows, macOS, Android, and LibreElec, these game emulator add-ons are already available in the official Kodi repository. Go to Add-ons > Install from Repository > Kodi Add-on Repository > Game Add-ons > Emulators to see all the available emulator add-ons.

There are many emulators for many platforms, installing all of them can be time-consuming. Pressing Choose on launch will let you select and install the emulators before launching a game.

Increasing the cache size allows IAGL to keep the files, the size of the folder depends on the kind of games you play. ROMs for older platforms are just a few KB, while some games for newer platforms can take hundreds of MB.

The MagPi magazine has put together a 164-page guide with everything you need to know about retro gaming with Raspberry Pi. You can download a free PDF from The MagPi magazine website, or find it in the Bookshelf app on Raspberry Pi OS.

Emulators are legal to download and use, however, sharing copyrighted ROMs online is illegal. There is no legal precedent for ripping and downloading ROMs for games you own, though an argument could be made for fair use.

A common argument online is that extracting a ROM from a cartridge you own is perfectly legal, but downloading ROMs from the web is a crime. Devices like the $60 Retrode let anyone extract a Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis game over USB, and state their legality over downloads as a key selling point. After all, ripping a CD you own with iTunes or other software is broadly considered legal, at least in the United States.

Consider the entertainment industry. The RIAA and MPAA have found more luck going after the sites and people sharing music, rather than the downloaders. For ROMs it largely works the same way, which is why sites that share games are so frequently shut down.

As a child, SampleRadar spent more time than it cares to recall thumbing its Game Boy and loitering in the local arcade. It's with a degree of sentimentality, then, that it approaches this week's collection of retro video game sounds.
